Antisana Páramo – Day trip

In less than 2 hours from Quito visit the wonderful highlands from the Antisana volcano, 3,500 to 4,900 meters / 11,483 to 16,076 feet a.s.l.

Experience for yourself the thrill of witnessing such prodigious nature and help with its conservation.

Departure and arrival times are fixed. Intermediate times may vary depending on circumstances.

6:00 a.m. Departure from Owi Base Camp (or pick up at your hotel in Quito, time to be defined).

7:15 a.m. Visit to  Peñón del Isco and its surroundings. We will have a good chance to see the Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus).

8:15 a.m. Breakfast.  Then we will head to Antisana National Park, an incredible site for its great biodiversity and impressive landscapes. On our way there we will be able to see several species of páramo birds, such as the Ecuadorian Hillstar (Oreotrochilus chimborazo), the Carunculated Caracara (Phalcoboenus carunculatus) and the spectacular Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus).  

10:00 a.m. Arrival at the site known as La Ovejería, where it is possible to see the Andean Ibis (Theristicus branickii), a spectacular species that inhabits this páramo and is critically endangered (CR). Although the probability to see it won’t be very high since there are only about 50 individuals left.

11:30 a.m. Arrival to La Mica Lagoon, where we will see aquatic birds such as the Andean Gull (Chroicocephalus serranus), Andean Teal (Anas andium), Andean Coot (Fulica ardesiaca), among others, and we will have the opportunity to hike in the Paramo.

13:30 p.m. We will leave Antisana National Park to Tambo Condor

14:00 p.m. Lunch at Tambo Condor, where we will be able to see several mountain hummingbirds, especially the Giant Hummingbird (Patagona gigas) and the Shining Sunbeam (Aglaeactis cupripennis)

15:30 p.m. We will depart back to Owi Base Camp (or your hotel).

17:00 p.m. Arrival at Owi Base Camp (or at your hotel in Quito, time to be defined).
